Lot Details

Low David - The Breeds of the Domestic Animals of the British Islands (2 Volumes) Illustrated With Plates From Drawings By Mr. W. Nicholson, R.S.A., Reduced From A Series Of Portraits From Life, Executed For The Agricultural Museum Of The University Of Edinburgh, By Mr W. Shiels, R.S.A., Volume I, The Horse, And The Ox. Vol II, The Sheep, The Goat, And The Hog. Longman, Orme, Brown, Green, And Longmans, London, first edition, 1842, folio, half red morocco, raised spine bands, gilt decorated compartments, gilt fore-edges. A very scarce set in nice order. Low was Professor of Agriculture in the University of Edinburgh and commissioned the artist William Shiels to paint portraits of the animal subjects from which the lithographed plates were made.
