Printed by D. Lyon, Wigan, first edition, 1809, ix dedication to Sir Joseph Banks, (1 blank), ii, ii, (50 leaves including sub-title leaf) 52 hand coloured engraved plates, 28pp, professionally rebound in half calf and marbled boards, 5 raised spine bands, ex libris BP of Joseph Wright. A scarce and handsome copy. William Martin (1767-1810) was an English naturalist and palaeontologist who proposed that science should use fossils as evidence to support the study of natural history. This his second publication describes the Carboniferous limestone and other fossils of Derbyshire, and is illustrated with his own engravings. Owing to his illnes, the intended second volume on fossils (especially plants) from coal strata, never appeared. Reference; Nissen ZBI 2715; Upcott 1, 143.
