Steuens Charles & Liebault John - Maison Rustique or The Covntrey Farme Compiled in the French tongue by Charles Steuens and John Liebault Doctors of Physicke: And translated into English by Richard Svrflet Practitioner in Physicke. Also a short collection of the hunting of the Hart, Wilde Bore, Hare, Fox, Gray, Cony; of Birds and Falconrie. Printed by Arnold Hatfield for John Norton and John Bill, London, 1606, (30) 901pp, plus 27 pages of tables, TP with engraved woodcut device, contemporary names, 1897 Esher Place Library (Surrey, England) label to front pastedown, lacks pages 421 to 428, 2 cm loss to lower edge of page 347, old silverfish holes to lower margin from FEP to page 52, not affecting text, half morocco, marbled boards and EP's. Scarce. The book is a thorough treatise on agriculture, horticulture, viticulture, forestry, wines, and food, distilling, bee-keeping, gardening, orchards, fishing and all kinds of hunting including falconry, plus remedies for man and animals. In its day it was the most important work on rural economy of the 16th century and was very successful, going into many edition and also translated into Italian, Dutch and German. The Esher Place library label refers to the affluent Grade II listed mansion in Surrey England, built and designed by George Thomas Robinson and Achille Duchene, the estate has a rich history, tied directly to English royalty and prominent historical figures and since 1953 has been used as a college for the trades union Unite.
