Lot Details

Beckford William - An Arabian Tale From An Unpublished Manuscript With Notes Critical and Explanatory. Printed for J. Johnson, London, 1786, vii (i) 334pp, page 48 numbered as 84, full calf, spine rebacked. Rare.From the collection of C. R. H. Taylor, former Chief Librarian, Alexander Turnbull Library, 1937-63. The book was first released in London in June 1786 as a fake translation "from an unpublished manuscript" in Arabic, complete with scholarly critical notes by its actual translator Reverend Samuel Henley.
