a large hand coloured copperplate engraved map, 1696, with large decorative title cartouche upper right, 46 x 62cm, framed. Mare del Sud is the earliest published and most decorative map of the Pacific Ocean, showing New Zealand as published by Abel Tasman the Dutch explorer and first European to discover New Zealand and chart part of the southern coast of Australia. The Venetian cartographer Vincenzo Coronelli was one of the most prominent map makers and publishers of his day . Between 1691 and 1696 he published Atlante Veneto, tow volumes of finely engraved copperplate maps. This is a lovely example of a rare early Pacific map and in great condition.
