Lot Details
In English and Latin. Printed by Benjamin Motte, London, 1707, Sold by John Sturt. Large folio. The first English edition of the most influential manual on Baroque illusionism. Translated by John James of Greenwich, this edition is a landmark of British architectural publishing. It is famously preceded by a "Recommendation" by the three giants of English Baroque architecture, Christopher Wren, John Vanburgh and Nicholas Hawksmoor. Dedicated to Queen Anne, whereas the original edition of 1693 was dedicated to Emperor Leopold I. Illustrated and features approx 200 historiated engraved initials throughout the text, which is in parallel columns in English and Latin , bound in full calf, (front board detached, small losses to lower edge of frontis), otherwise a very good and scarce copy.
