Lot Details
The document shows Nelson giving a short answer to a complaint over the seizure of a Genoese vessel and is headed Vanguard at Sea Aug 28th 1798. The letter is likely his draft for his clerk, and is written with his left hand, he had lost his right arm a year earlier having been wounded by cannon shot at Tenerife. Signed Horatio Nelson lower right. This was a constant hazard to naval officers of the period and Nelson, who was then in the Mediterranean no doubt remembered the unpleasantness when he was a captain in the West Indies during the American War of Independence and seized many West Indian vessels on suspicion of their illegal commerce with the Americans.
