Lot Details

C19th British The Cutter Alarm Crosses the Line c.1830 oil on canvas 46 x 76cm This painting shows the Cutter 'Alarm' crossing the line ahead of Lord Belfast's Cutter 'Louisa'. This is one of the earliest paintings of a regatta. It can be accurately dated from Squadron records between 1829 & 1832. The Cutters are identified by their racing pennants. The 'Alarm' was owned by Mr Joseph Weld. A member of the Ward family was came to Marlborough, New Zealand, and founded Flaxbourne Station with Mr Clifford. Cowes is still the centre of British yachting. It was here the America's Cup, then known as the Guinea Cup, was won by the schooner yacht 'America' in a race around the Isle of Wight in 1851.
