He trained as a cadet with the NZ shipping company and became a Foreign-going Master mariner in the late 1960s. While he was self-employed as a pilot for the Port of Southampton he was licensed by Trinity House and appointed to the order of Younger Brethren, a position he has held for life. His love of anything maritime is life long and has been actively curated by his sharp eye. It was after a chance conversation on a train ride one day in 1968 that he began collecting. Buying both from auction houses and privately he has since accrued one of the largest maritime collections in New Zealand. Crowder has spent the last thirty years living above Waikawa Bay in a nautically themed house amongst this wonderful collection.
