Lot Details
Josiah Martin (1843-1916) Portrait Of Mohi Te Puatau of Ngati Paoa with Patu albumen print, inscribed Mohi Maori Chief, 20.5 x 15cm. The chief was known under various names including, Mohi Te Ahi-a-Te Ngu, Mohi Horowhenua Te Puatau, Mohi Takawai and Moses. The renowned artist Louis John Steele painted multiple portraits of Mohi, who became a well known figure in colonial Auckland. A similar glass negative of the image is held in Auckland War Museum collection and this image may well have been taken at the studio sitting at the same time.
