Performed In His Majesty's Ships the Resolution and Adventure, In the Years 1772, 1773, 1774, and 1775. Written By James Cook, Commander of the Resolution. To which is included, Captain Furneaux's Narrative of his Proceedings in the Adventure during the Separation of the Ships. W. Strahan; and T. Cadell in the Strand, London, Third Edition, 1779. 2 volumes, quarto, engraved portrait frontis to Volume I, 63 engraved maps, charts and plates, 31 double page and folding, tree calf, 5 raised spine bands, gilt decorated compartments, spine title in red, volume numbers in green, marbled EPs. Presented to Peter Fraser, New Zealand Prime Minister by Arthur Mee with hand written inscription to rear endpaper in Volume I which reads, "Pres to Mr Peter Fraser Prime Minister of New Zealand in memory of his visit to my Kent Hilltop and with much admiration of his great public spirit & devotion to the British Commonwealth Arthur Mee 1941. The third edition of the narrative of Cook's Second Voyage describing the first expedition to cross the Antarctic Circle, further visits to New Zealand and "an astonishing series of discoveries & rediscoveries" (Hill) It was on this voyage that Cook brought the Polynesian Omai back to England, where he became a celebrity within London Society. His portrait executed by William Hodgkins the expedition artist appears in the book.
