Undertaken By The Order Of His Present Majesty For Making Discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere, And successively performed by Commodore Byron, Captain Wallis, Captain Carteret And Captain Cook, In the Dolphin, the Swallow, and the Endeavour. Drawn Up From the Journals which were kep by the several Commanders And from the Papers of Joseph Banks, Esq. Printed for W. Strahan; and T. Cadell in the Strand, London, 1773. Volume I, xxxiv, 676pp, Volume II, xv, 410pp, Volume III, 411-799, complete with 52 plates as required, many folding, (Chart of The Strait of Magellan is at front of Volume I) full calf, spines crudely taped, endpapers taped, all 3 vols with taped repair to the upper right corner of the title-page, general foxing, discolouring, some splits and taped repairs. In general the plates are crisp and clean and it is a good and complete second edition, often regarded as the best edition. This narrative was edited from Cook's journals by the professional writer Hawkesworth. Cook's voyages occupies volumes 2 and 3, the first volume contains the official accounts of the voyages of Byron, Carteret and Wallis, and Hawkesworth's compendium thus contains the cream of 18th century English explorations.
