hand coloured, pictorial vignette title cartouche upper right corner, 48 x 61cm. A rare and superb chart revealing how little was known about the Pacific Ocean in the late 17th century. Showing Tasmans discoveries in Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) and New Zealand. The ocean is mostly empty other than an imaginary coastline to the centre. It was this "blank canvas" James Cook filled between 1769 and 1779.
