Bible (German) Biblia, Das ist: Die Gantze Hellige Schrifft, durch Martin Luther verteuscht (....) Franckfurt am Mayn: Kalkeysen, MDCLXVIII (1668) Extra engraved title, printed title in red and black, 6 maps on copper (82), 486 (2) 526, 127 (44), 414pp, folio leaf 40 x 24cm, contemporary embossed leather over bevelled boards, rebacked (unlettered0, with ornate figural brass clasps and corners. Front hinge reinforced, some wear to joints but sound, old tape repairs to margins of title leaf, engraved title, maps and final leaf;, edges of some maps mildly frayed, housed in a conservation box. Notes on provenance pasted to endpapers. An interesting feature of this scarce bible is the double page map of the world which incorporates Tasman's discoveries including NZ. Provenance indicates that this is the third printed map showing Zelandia Nova. VD17, 12:652984B (dedication to Carl Ludwig, Pfalzgarf bey Rhein) BL STC German 1601-1700 B1033, ex libris BP of Edward C Simpson, former senior librarian at the John Rylands Library, Manchester. The bible weighs over 8kg.
