Lot Details
Mid C19th British The Fleet off Spithead c. 1845 watercolour 41 x 59cm This water shows the Squadron of the Red on fleet exercises, probably off Portsmouth at Spithead. The Flag Ship is a First Rate (over 110 guns), and she is "hove to" with her foremast sails backed. She is flying the hoist 165 which from the 1853 naval code book means "in want of powder". The second Rater (80-110 guns) is also "hove to" with the sails on the mainmast backed. Perhaps they are about to exercise a transfer of ammunition. All the vessels seem to be in a fairly close quarter situation.
