Dr John Horder (British, 1919 -2012) The Royal College of General Practitioners - 1980 lithograph, edition 153/200 signed lower right 405 x 555mm The original painting commemorates the historic occasion when, in May 1980, the siege by terrorists of the Iranian Embassy at 16 Princes Gate, was ended by the Special Air Service and the Metropolitan Police, who stormed the building, The burnt-out shell of the Embassy is seen on the left of the picture. The College played an important part in this operation as the base for the troops and police who carried it out. Although they went in with explosives and small arms fire, the only damage to the College which ensued was caused by fighting the fierce fire started in the Embassy and preventing it from spreading to neighbouring houses.
