Lot Details
the box is mahogany with brass fitting and handles, an inset shield to the top is engraved F. W. Reichelt to R. Stout 1872. The box was almost certainly presented to Robert for his help in winning a court case for Mr Reichelt, a former Prussian soldier, who was accused of arson and burning down his own premises in Dunedin (Toys & Fancy Goods) in what appears very dubious circumstances. Sir Robert at the time was junior counsel to Reichelt's barrister George Barton and emerged from the trial as a rising legal star, in later life he became the 13th Premier 1884-1887, also Attorney General & Chief Justice 1899-1926 and a key founder of Victoria College University in Wellington. .
