possibly belonging to Chief Te Rangihaeata (Ngati Toa). Six ridges to butt, blade with minor chips. L 28cm Y22901 Provenance: A letter signed and dated 18 June 1928 from M. P. Swainson identifies the mere by size. The letter claims that the mere passed upon the death of the chief to his brother Matene Te Whiri on whose death it passed to his sister, Heni Te Rei. Upon her death it passed to Riria Wirihana (granddaughter of Matene Te Whiwhi and M. P. Swainson's mother). The letter is addressed to Mrs Macalister. Letter available to view on request.
