A Fine Meiji Period Satsuma vase by Kinkozan Moon flask form, the body painted with opposing panels emblematic of spring, one side with a nesting bird in a flowering tree beside a river, the reverse with similar decoration with a flowering tree and birds. The circular panels framed by a richly gilded exterior on a cobalt ground with incipient mask ring handles to the shoulder. Impressed seal mark to the underside. H 21cm The Kinkozan workshop was one of the most successful producers of Satsuma wares. Like their equivalents from Osaka, Yokohama, and Tokyo, these pieces were Kyoto’s response to the Western demand for delicately painted Japanese pottery
