Josef Oppenheimer (1876 - 1966) Portrait of Katherine Wiliamson (nee Duncombe) oil on canvas signed (lower left) & dated '37 109 x 84cm Josef Oppenehimer was born in Barvaria and studied in Munich before travelling to Italy to complete his artistic training. He travelled between Germany and England in the interwar years and accepted many portrait commissions in both countries. In 1933 as the Nazi Party rose to power Oppenheimer made plans to leave the country, and by early in 1934 had set up his studio at St John’s Wood in London. By 1939 when war broke out, Oppenheimer had gained a position of popularity with clients including politicians, diplomats, writers and aristocrats. His work includes landscapes, still life and portraiture in many media, influenced by the Impressionist and Expressionist movements. Oppenheimer emigrated to Canada in 1949, the Oppenheimer-Prager Museum, dedicated to his work was established by his grandson in 1995, in New Brunswick.
