Lot Details

1844 hand coloured aquatint, 29 x 39cm and in a mahogany frame with spurious applied bone label to the bottom, and an indistinct 2 page handwritten letter verso. The view which includes numerous inaccuracies as Baxter never visited New Zealand, shows the ship Triton anchored offshore with a Maori waka and a rowboat approaching the shore. Mr Creed is in the boat whilst his wife Mrs Creed is carried ashore on the shoulders of a group of Maori women. Mt Taranaki can be seen in the distance.2 creases runing down from the top edge, light foxing and discolouring, otherwise a rare first printing.
