And Selection In Relation To Sex. John Murray, London, 1871, with illustrations, each volumes signed on the half-title John Bryce Nov 5th 80, rebound half green calf with original leather spine strips laid down. John Bryce was a New Zealand politician from 1871-1891 and Minister of Native Affairs from 1879 to 1884. In his attitudes to Maori land questions, he favoured strict legal actions Maori opposed to alienation, and he personally directed the invasion of Parihaka and the arrest of the leaders of the movement. He also won a high profile legal case in London defeating George William Rusden in relation to his involvment. After a stint in the Australian goldfields in 1851 he bought a farm near Wanganui and remained a farmer there for 50 years.
