Lot Details

“The Sky is a Limpet”, a pollytickle parrotty: also four (4) stories or moral feebles. First ed. Bob Lowry at Phillips Press, Devonport, 1939 [13]pp pictorial wrappers, mild wear; inscribed “Jasper Brett / from A.R.D. Fairburn / 7 June 1940 / with the best wishes / in a bad world”. The essential quote is Bagnall F36: “Almost the entire issue of this satire on M.J. Savage was withdrawn”. with The 1966 close reprint of the original, produced by George Fraser and Harold Innes. There are three variant copies of this: (1) an early proof, never stapled, with a draft of the new one-page introduction; (2) another early copy with misprint ‘report’ for ‘reprint’ crossed out in the introduction; (3) a final copy, signed by George Fraser on the introduction, inscribed by him to Wellington bookseller Richard Reynolds with a nice letter to him on his catalogues; plus a 1968 letter to Reynolds concerning the book with A letter from Fraser to Denis Glover enclosing copy (1) above and discussing the setting of the new introduction and the choice of paper with a 2-page 1966 letter to Denis Glover from Jane Ann [Andersen] of Blackwood & Janet Paul who advised on the reprint and distributed it: “Dear dear dear Denis …”, on an advance for Sharp edge up and on plans for reprints of other Fairburn material.
