John Mackay, Dunedin, 1881. 274pp, dy 8vo black cloth gilt, scattered foxing. Bagnall 5257. A book dealing with land speculation, which Southan, a Timaru accountant, had himself been charged over in Australia before coming to NZ. He was born in Boston, Mass, headed to Australia in the 1870s, to NZ in 1876, where he married, then returned to Australia and died in Sydney. All the leading characters in the novel are real persons under only partly disguised names.
