Lot Details
Smithereens, Skidderie i.e. Sydney Goodsir Smith. The Caledonian Press. Glasgow, 1947. 80pp 8vo wrappers, first printing, issued to members of the Auk Society only. 80pp; frontis of a great auk, "The Auk" was the author's nickname. Edinburgh owner’s name on endpaper. It is an amusing and satirical comic novel written in an extreme, sometimes obscure form of broad Scots dialect. A Rabelaisian-cum-Joycean extravaganza, it was described by Hugh MacDiarmid as “doing for Edinburgh no less successfully what Joyce did for Dublin”. Smith, 1915-75, was born in Wellington, leaving with his father for Edinburgh at age two. Together with a copy of the 1964 edition, worn d/w, inscribed by Smith on endpaper.
