Lot Details

A.D. Innes, London, 1894. 304pp, 8vo cloth, scattered light foxing, spine with slight lean. First published in 2 volumes the previous year. Full name of author: Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins. A satire on society and politics set in the imaginary British colony of New Lindsey, and what happens when the Governor unwillingly accepts the radical socialist appointment of Jimmy Medland as Premier of the Colony. Several New Zealand newspapers (e.g.The New Zealand Mail 23 Nov.1894) took it for granted that the setting was New Zealand and the chief character "a well-known public figure".
