Lot Details
Douglas MacDiarmid (1922-2020) Coastal Landscape signed (lower left) 24.5 x 37.5cm in original hand painted frame PROVENANCE Fleischl Collection NOTES Supplied by Anna Cahill, Director, MacDiarmid Arts Trust A European boat harbour on a sunny day, with three figures looking out towards ancient stone rampart walls protecting the port. Although unidentified it is probably a port in the south of France, perhaps Marseille, or La Rochelle further west on the Atlantic coast. Most likely painted in the early 1950s, when Douglas was living between Paris and Cannes and exploring the Côte d’Azur. It is significant that he included people in this coastscape. In his early years, it troubled MacDiarmid that New Zealand landscapes were habitually devoid of people – as if the land was empty – and he set about to remedy that in his own work.
