Gathered by John Gerarde of London, 1597 London, John Norton, first edition 1597 (16 0f 20), 1392 (70 of 72)pp 305 x 204mm, folio, rough calf, red spine label, later endpapers. BP of Edward Simpson. Over 2000 woodcuts, 2 with early hand colouring. Lacks title leaf and 1 leaf of preliminary matter (B6) and last leaf, occasional water stain to top edge of first hundred or so pages, last leaf frayed at edges, covers worn at edges with small piece missing. STC 11750, ESTC 5122353, Henrey 154. Sold as Lot 4, Dunbar Sloane limited, Edward Simpson Collection, 30/9/2009. The 1597 edition is much rarer on the market than the 1633 edition. The First Edition of this great herbal by "the best known of English herbalists" (Arber). The woodcuts include nearly 200 native plants which had not been described, as well as the first illustration of the potato (From Bonhams description, 12th April, 2022, Lot 85)
