Erasmus-John Jorton - The Life Of Erasmus (2 Volumes) Printed for J Whiston and B White, first edition, London, 1758 & 1760, engraved frontis portrait of Erasmus after Holbein, TP in red and black, Vol I, vi (1) 630pp, Vol II, contents, 753pp, finely bound, full calf, blind stamped crest to front and rear boards, spines in morocco, 5 raised bands, full page ex libris BP of William Stirling Maxwell. A very fine set, one volume containing The Life of Erasmus, Vol II contains the Remarks on Works of Erasmus and an Appendix containing extracts from Erasmus and other writers. Sir William Stirling Maxwell, 9th Baronet, (1818-1878) was a politician, writer and art historian, Chancellor of the University Of Glasgow, Knight of the Thistle, the highest honour conferred on a Scotsman by the Crown. Stirlings father owned a number of slave plantations in Jamaica, his illegitimate son Edward was one of the first settlers in South Australia.
