An Account of the Voyages undertaken by the Order of his Present Majesty for making Discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere, And successfully performed by Commodore Byron, Captain Wallis, Captain Carteret, and Captain Cook, in the Dolphin, the Swallow, and the Endeavour: Drawn up from the Journals which were kept by the several Commanders, and from the Papers of Joseph Banks, Esq; by John Hawkesworth, LL.D. In three volumes, Illustrated with Cuts, and a great Variety of Charts and Maps relative to Countries now first discovered or hitherto but imperfectly known. W Strahan & T Cadell in the Strand, 1773, 29cm, Vol I xxxvi, 139pp, [363] - 676pp, frontis (folding chart) 8 charts (folding) 3 plates (folding), 5 views (folding), 3 maps. Vol II xv, 410pp, 6 charts (folding), 13 plates (8 folding), 1 view (folding), 2 maps. Vol III [411] - 799, 3 charts (folding), 6 plates (3 folding), blond calf, rebacked, gilt ruled raised bands, applied spine labels in second and third compartments, gilt tololed edges, now worn, as are corners, a few upper corners of the textblock are are untrimmed. The Bayley "Chart of New Zealand" is creased and has a closed tear. All volumes with episodic foxing, including the plates and waved. BP of Mackenzie, Fawley Court, mounted to pastedowns with circular deer head motif added to the front endpaper of Vol I. Bagnall 2514 & Beddie 648.
