First Edition, Thomas M'Lean, London, 1847. Folio, 58 x 39.5cm, illustrated with 60 hand coloured lithographic plates, frontis after Angas, W. Hawkins, Louisa Hawkins and J. W. Giles, dedication to Prince Albert, subscribers, preface and general remarks. Rebound half brown tooled calf and cloth covered boards, 6 raised gilt decorated bands, 7 compartments with title, author and date to 2, 4, and 7, frayed E/s, new EP/s, frontis heavily restored, plate XIII repaired tear, plate XIV small tear to lower edge, plates XXIX & XXX repairs to lower left corner and left edge and text page with repaired tears to all edges. Some discolouring, minor FX, otherwise bright and crisp plates. POS and date to top right of title page. Ref: G Bagnall 114, Hocken 129. In 1844 Angas travelled some 800 miles through mainly uncharted territory. His drawings of Maori's in native dress, their houses, totems, ornaments, weapons, wood and other carvings, funerals, dances and customs from a record of civilisation that was about to undergo radical change. An exceptionally rare first edition which comes in a conservation box along with the covers of 4 of the 10 folders from another subscriber.
