Lot Details

Ann Robinson (b 1944) Pair Twisted Flax Pods gaffer lead crystal glass in kowhai yellow with umber stems etched signature 'A. Robinson 2006 NZ' to stem 116cm, 117cm lengths Provenance commissioned from the artist Private Estate, Wellington ‘Twisted flax pods inspired by the flax seedpods that grow around my home at Karekare. I have made paired flax pods with changing emphasis on 17 different occassions. I find the process of reworking a piece can lead in unexpected directions, It requires feeling around inside one’s self for the solution, for the image that satisfies and expresses half-understood feelings. At first, as with Twisted Flax Pods #6 #7, from 2003, the pods were twins, individuals lying together in a harmonious relationship, like a pair resting after some strenuous encounter – peaceful, spent. Over the following years I have frequently focused on seedpods as a metaphor for fertility, symbolising the promise of an abundant future. This sentimentality for the natureal world is perhaps a longing for an old connection to a fecund world, a world of spirit and place that we have lost today. Lately, balance and counterbalance have become an increasing focus.’ Ann Robinson p. 35
