Lot Details
Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant. A 17 page hand written manuscript on lined paper, the first page headed Hospital Ship "Marama" 28 Feb 1916. The journal was written "as the opportunity arose" from February to April 1916. Topics covered vary between observations while on leave gathering and caring for the wounded and the recruitment of nurses. Frank was born in 1893, he enlisted with the NZ Medical Corps at 23 years old and served on the hospital ship NZHS Marama which left Wellington on December 5, 1915 bound for Suez via several intermediate ports, eventually arriving at Alexandria, Egypt by January 20, 1916. Marama had arrived just after the evacuation began on December 19, 1915, and embarked her first wounded troops from Gallipoli and Salonika. Ultimately Marama carried many thousands of wounded to England, of all nationalities in the British Commonwealth and also made voyages back to New Zealand to bring home wounded kiwi soldiers. In later life Frank went on to become the Chief Commissioner for St John in New Zealand and was awarded the OBE and presented the Order of the Knight of St John by the Queen in 1954. The journal also comes with a roller map tracking the 49 days it took the T.S.Pakeha from London to New Zealand, sailing on April 12th 1919
